Aerial Knife: Live at the Grad Club on Friday May 4!

Hey Earth Sciences!

We’re pleased to announce that two of your fellow grad students, Tom Ulanowski and Michael Afanasiev, alongside Dr. Brian Branfireun (Biology/Earth Sciences) and Bart Nowak, will be rocking your socks off when they get up on stage at the Grad Club on Friday, May 4.

These talented musicians will be playing tunes that will surely get you singing and dancing. Come out on Friday, have a pint or two, and support your colleagues as they play their hearts out for you.

At the very least, you’ll have a good reason to make fun of them :)

Tell your friends!

SPECIAL GUESTS:
Mike Del Vecchio (7 pm)
&
Chris Keene spinnin’ music in between

Grad of the Week: Meriem Grifi

Name: Meriem Grifi, MSc Candidate

Supervisor: Guy Plint

Describe your current research:

My project aims to clarify stratigraphic relationships between rock units in the southern Alberta Foothills, with the subsurface geology of the Plains, as well as geology across the border into northwestern Montana. Ammonite and Inoceramid sample collections will also aid in constraining the age of these rock units. Overall, reconstructing the paleogeography of the area for the Late Cretaceous Coniacian Stage will provide details into the tectonic and eustatic controls on sedimentation during that time

How long have you been at Western?

6-10 Years

What is one word that you would use to describe the Earth Science Department at Western?

Dynamic

What are some other interests/hobbies you have (non-academic)?

I enjoy reading fictional novels, and lately I have become a huge fan of Harry Potter books on audiotape! I also love puzzles and skating!

Unfortunately, I don’t have much time these days, but what I really enjoyed doing before was volunteering at a retirement home visiting seniors and chatting to them (great way to stock up on sweets), and I do miss my high school outreach visits and seeing all the curious young faces- plenty of time to get back into it after I graduate though :-)

If you had to choose, what is your favourite musical band (or genre)?

Infected Mushroom

What is one thing that most people don’t know about you?

I would love to own my own business some day. My current dream is to have a great tapas hangout in downtown Calgary, or wherever I will be in some 10 years time!

Do you have a favourite quote/mantra? What is it?

Someone gave me a wonderful quote that has helped me stay positive in the last few months as I’ve struggled with various research related ‘poopoos’, if you will. The words are very simple and quite obvious when you think about their meanings. Nevertheless, it is more easy than not to forget about the simpler things in life and as grad students, we all know about a bad day or two in the lab (stop reading here if you’re perfect)… I’ve taken to starting and ending my days at school with the words below, and perhaps a few of you will appreciate them too!

‘Keep your thoughts positive because your thoughts become your words. Keep your words positive because your words become your behavior. Keep your behavior positive because your behavior becomes your habits. Keep your habits positive because your habits become your values. Keep your values positive because your values become your destiny’

                                                                                       -Mahatma Gandhi

Tell us about a funny/memorable story from field-work and/or research:

This question brings a rush of various memories, so perhaps it is hard for me to pick just one…

The best part of my research has probably been the chance to see a lot of beautiful country in Western Canada. Quite a few trips involved interesting events like steep and high slopes (we of course had safety harnesses :P ), crossing rivers at questionable sites (prompting a tango like dance across the river with your supervisor), and practicing your best Chubaka impression to keep the bears away. To be able to laugh about this with your colleagues at the end of a long hard day logging outcrop on hot and shaly slopes is probably what makes the whole experience worth it!

Dave Shoesmith lectures on Nuclear Waste Disposal

This coming Friday, February 3, Dave Shoesmith is going to give a colloquium talk on Nuclear Waste disposal and the role that geologists and geophysicists must play in this endeavour.

He will have information of interest to geologists and geophysicists concerning educational background needed for employment in the high-tech energy field (ie. electricity generation fields). If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to work in this highly lucrative field, then join us this Friday at 3:30 pm (BGS 0153).

As always, we will convene at the Grad Club right after the talk for a chance to chat with Dr. Shoesmith and fellow students and faculty!

GGS Logo Contest

Earth Science, we need your help!

This is our old logo... Yikes!

We’re looking for a new logo for the GGS, and we’re hoping one of you can make it happen. We know there are plenty of talented people in the department who could make a cool, eye-catching logo for us to use on our website, promotions, and who knows, maybe even future swag.

If you want to give it a shot, then email us a submission by Friday, February 17 to uwogradgeo@gmail.com.

The logo:

- Could be hand drawn, but preferably vector based
– Has to be high resolution and scalable
– Contain “Geological Symbology” (whatever that means)
– Has to be awesome

Once we receive all of the submissions, we will put it to a departmental vote and the winner will be announed soon after. Good luck!

Get to better know your colleagues!

Hey Earth Science! We’re a big department full of some pretty cool people, right? Well, how about we get to know each other a little bit better?

In our new initiative, the GGS will be highlighting a few grad students and faculty members per week, based on their answers to a set of questions, conveniently found in the following link:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?hl=en_GB&formkey=dFhuZDFScXFtZlFsb0E0elllcXlrOHc6MQ#gid=0

Please submit a high-resolution picture of yourself to uwogradgeo@gmail.com, or better yet, have one of our talented photographers Piotr, Dave or Tom, take one for you!

Check back in a bit to see the first of many new initiatives by your favourite Graduate Geosciences Society!
